democracy wins: derek webb covers coldplay’s ‘fix you’
in early january, i blogged about derek webb’s latest innovative project called democracy vol. 1. last month, fans could cast votes for up to 12 songs that they wanted webb to cover. then, the 12 songs receiving the most votes would be covered by webb for the album. the album will then be recorded over the span on 2010, with 1 track being recorded and released each month. last month, webb released the first track, which was a beautiful version of the beatles’ while my guitar gently weeps. you can listen to that track here.
instead of releasing the the full list of tracks, webb plans to reveal each track month-by-month. and today, we found out the second one.
today, he released february’s track, which is coldplay’s fix you. i was glad to see that this song received enough votes to make the cut (i’m pretty sure i voted for it). this is an important song to me & christen because it was instrumental in the healing time for us after losing a child (via miscarriage) several years ago.
with that said, you should all brace yourselves… many of you know my deep & abiding love for derek webb, but here comes the ugly ‘but’… i’m just not too into his version. one of the beauties of coldplay’s version is that it has a driving build to it with a lot of soul and energy. webb’s version strips those things. i have a feeling i’ll grow to like it with more listens, but for now, i think i might stick to coldplay’s original.
but, you can be the judge. here’s both coldplay’s version (in case you haven’t heard it) and derek webb’s cover. enjoy.
