grammy nomination predictions: success??

so, a couple months ago, shortly after the announcement of the grammy nominations, i offered the official being ryan byrd grammy predictions. so, after the grammys last night, i thought i would take a look and see how i did. (which, as a side note, if you didn’t see the radiohead performance, you need to immediately go watch it. you can do so by clicking here.)

(by the way, here’s a bit of a legend for how i made my predictions. i bolded the ones that i wanted to win or that i would have personally chosen. i put 2 asterisks next to the one that i actually thought would win.)

1. Record Of The Year
Chasing Pavements: Adele
Viva La Vida: Coldplay
Bleeding Love: Leona Lewis
Paper Planes: M.I.A
Please Read The Letter: Robert Plant & Alison Krauss**

got it right. this was an amazing track and i knew the grammy voters would lean toward this type of record.

2. Album Of The Year
Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends: Coldplay
Tha Carter III: Lil Wayne (please, god, no…)
Year Of The Gentleman: Ne-Yo
Raising Sand: Robert Plant & Alison Krauss**
In Rainbows: Radiohead
got it right. while i personally would have chosen coldplay, i knew the grammy voters would choose raising sand, which i also think is an incredible album.

3. Song Of The Year
American Boy: Estelle ft. Kanye West
Chasing Pavements: Adele **
I’m Yours: Jason Mraz (although i really love this song)
Love Song: Sara Bareilles
Viva La Vida: Coldplay
wrong. i’m glad coldplay won, but i was absolutely convinced adele was going to win this one.

4. Best New Artist
Adele**
Duffy
Jonas Brothers
Lady Antebellum
Jazmine Sullivan
got it right. this one was too obvious.

5. Best Female Pop Vocal Performance
Chasing Pavements: Adele
Love Song: Sara Bareilles
Mercy: Duffy
Bleeding Love: Leona Lewis**
I Kissed A Girl: Katy Perry
So What: Pink
got it right. i missed it on song of the year, but i knew she was bound to get it on this category.

6. Best Male Pop Vocal Performance
All Summer Long: Kid Rock (he embarrasses me to be an american…)
Say: John Mayer
That Was Me: Paul McCartney**
I’m Yours: Jason Mraz
Closer: Ne-Yo
Wichita Lineman: James Taylor
wrong. usually the grammy folks go for the geezers, so i thought mccartney was a shoe-in. apparently they also like dudes who make weird faces when they sing.
7. Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals
Viva La Vida: Coldplay
Waiting In The Weeds: Eagles** (the grammy’s notoriously love this kind of crap)
Going On: Gnarls Barkley
Won’t Go Home Without You: Maroon 5
Apologize: OneRepublic
got it right. again, too obvious.

8. Best Pop Vocal Album
Detours: Sheryl Crow
Rockferry: Duffy
Long Road Out Of Eden: Eagles
Spirit: Leona Lewis
Covers: James Taylor**

wrong. again, usually the grammy folks go for the geezers, so i thought james taylor was a shoe-in. surprised by duffy’s win.
9. Best Rock Song
Girls In Their Summer Clothes: Bruce Springsteen**
House Of Cards: Radiohead
I Will Possess Your Heart: Death Cab For Cutie
Sex On Fire: Kings Of Leon
Violet Hill: Coldplay
got it right. my argument for the old dudes finally paid off here.

10. Best Rock Album
Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends: Coldplay**
Rock N Roll Jesus: Kid Rock
Only By The Night: Kings Of Leon (although this is really good, also)
Death Magnetic: Metallica
Consolers Of The Lonely: The Raconteurs

got it right. coldplay: the limestone of rock music.

11. Best Alternative Music Album
Modern Guilt: Beck**
Narrow Stairs: Death Cab For Cutie (this is a toss up with gnarls barkley, for me)
The Odd Couple: Gnarls Barkley
Evil Urges: My Morning Jacket
In Rainbows: Radiohead

wrong. crap, i shouldn’t have missed this one. beck usually swoons the grammy folks, though.

so there ya go: 11 predictions, 7 correct. not too shabby. i should have known better on a couple, but i’m really surprised at a couple others.

see you next year for the grammys again.
