surely not…
third day’s new album, revelation, came out last week. i saw the album cover several months ago and i kept thinking there was something strangely familiar about it. it finally clicked about why it looked so familiar (see below). honestly, i’m going to give them a benefit of the doubt and say that this isn’t a ripoff as much as it might appear. but, i have to admit, being a graphic designer, my eyebrow would definitely raise if i designed the radiohead cover and then saw the third day package.
unfortunately, this harkens back to the big argument against christian music that it’s just one big industry full of copycats. admittedly, i have a love/hate relationship with the christian music industry (a.k.a. the christian music machine). some of my all-time favorite artists (kevin max, dc talk, mute math, derek webb, etc.) are either a part of the christian music industry or got their start within it. i’m not one of the people who unfairly heap every christian artist in the same category of uninteresting, copycat music, but it’s become increasingly difficult to actually find anything musically creative and lyrically poignant. the machine is more well-oiled than its ever been, but that simply means that it’s become more sell-out-oriented and bland than ever.
anywho, i digress. here’s the album covers. you can decide for yourself.
